Capturing Moments: A Guide to 2024 Photography Trends | Jillian Goulding Photography

One of the beauties of being a photographer is that there are endless opportunities to be creative — from the photos you take to styling clients to editing images to the ways you use light, and a million other details. But just like any other creative field, some things come in and out of style. So today I want to talk about some 2024 photography trends… aka what’s IN for this year as we embark on new adventures and sessions, no matter where you live.

Six 2024 Photography Trends to Keep An Eye On

Let’s explore the top photography trends of 2024 that will help you capture timeless moments and elevate your craft!

Trend 01: Embracing Natural Light

One of the enduring trends in photography (and one of my ALL-TIME favorites) is the use of natural light. Embracing the beauty of sunlight or soft ambient light can add a touch of warmth and authenticity to your images. Explore outdoor venues and shoot during the golden hours for that magical, ethereal glow that enhances wedding, family, and lifestyle photography.

Trend 02: Focusing on Candid Moments and Authenticity

Gone are the days of stiff, posed shots. (And we all said hallelujah.) Authenticity is key in 2024, with clients seeking genuine moments that reflect their personalities. Encourage natural interactions, capture candid emotions, and focus on storytelling to create a narrative that resonates with your audience.

Trend 03: Utilizing Drone Photography for Unique Perspectives

Drone photography continues to soar in popularity, offering a fresh and unique perspective. I’ll be honest, I still have some exploring and learning to do in this territory, but it’s something that’s super intriguing to me. You may want to incorporate aerial shots into your portfolio, especially for weddings and outdoor family sessions. Drones provide stunning visuals and capture the vastness of landscapes or the intimacy of special moments.

Trend 04: Using Minimalist Editing and True-to-Life Colors

In a world of filters and over-editing on social media, I absolutely LOVE this trend right now. The use of minimalistic editing is gaining traction, emphasizing the importance of preserving the natural beauty of moments. Strive for true-to-life colors and avoid over-processing images. This approach creates a timeless feel that your clients will appreciate for years to come.

Trend 05: Thinking About Environmental Sustainability in Photography

Where are my eco-friendly girlies at? In 2024, there’s a growing emphasis on sustainable practices in photography, which I honestly think is SO cool. Consider using sustainable packaging, digital delivery options, and environmentally conscious photo products. Clients increasingly appreciate photographers who prioritize sustainability in their business practices.

Trend 06: Demonstrating Inclusive and Diverse Representation

Photographers are recognizing the importance of inclusivity and diversity in their work. Review your portfolio and make sure it reflects a variety of cultures, backgrounds, and family dynamics. This not only broadens your appeal but also contributes to a more inclusive representation within the photography community, which is endlessly important.

As you embark on your journey as a photographer in 2024, remember that trends are a guide, not a strict rulebook. Blend your unique style with these trends to create memorable and impactful images.
