As a photographer, you might only see the potential revenue stream in your business as booking sessions. This is, of course, the main bulk of where you’ll make money, but it’s also important to consider additional ways to diversify your income as a photographer so you can generate multiple streams of income. Relying solely on one offering could limit your financial growth and stability, and doesn’t account for slower times during the year. So let’s walk through a few straightforward ways to expand your revenue streams!

A Guide to Diversifying Your Income as A Photographer | Jillian Goulding Photography

7 ways to diversify your income as a photographer

1. Offer additional services.

You might consider expanding your service offerings beyond standard packages. This might look like providing add-ons such as photo retouching, album design, or even photography workshops. You could also do specialized services like drone photography or virtual tours, which can also attract a broader client base.

2. Produce stock photography.

It might be worthwhile to jump into the world of stock photography by licensing your images to online platforms, especially if you have photos that can be used for a variety of uses. This can create a passive income stream as your photos are sold multiple times. You’ll just want to be sure you’re producing high-quality, unique images that stand out in a crowded market.

3. Create photography products.

Did you know you can turn your best shots into art prints, canvases, or merchandise like mugs and calendars?! Set up an online store or partner with local businesses to display and sell your products both online and in-person. You can also capitalize on seasonal trends or local events to create limited edition prints, which can boost sales.

4. Collaborate with local businesses.

Who else loves to support their local community? Build partnerships with local businesses (like event planners, florists, coffee shops, restaurants, or venues) and offer your photography services for their promotional materials or events. When you cross-promote with these businesses, it also expands your reach and attracts new clients.

5. Create photo content for brands.

Every thought about becoming an influencer?! Well, you can by leveraging your photography skills for brand collaborations. Many companies are always looking for high-quality visual content for their social media, websites, and marketing materials. Reach out to local brands or use online platforms to connect with businesses seeking professional photographers. Send them some shots of your work to gain traction and attention to get the conversation started!

6. Teach photo workshops.

By running a successful photography biz, you’re an expert! Have you ever thought about that? You can share your knowledge and skills by organizing photography workshops to teach others what you know in a community setting. This not only adds to your income but also establishes you as an authority in your niche. Workshops can be conducted online or in-person, catering to both local and broader audiences.

7. Create and sell digital products.

On the note of teaching, you can also develop and sell digital products related to photography, such as Lightroom presets, e-books on photography tips, or online courses. Utilize platforms like Etsy, Gumroad, or your personal website to market and sell your digital products.

Diversifying your income as a photographer is a strategic approach to building a sustainable and resilient business. Remember, adaptability and thinking outside the box is key in the ever-evolving landscape of the photography industry!
