Mini-session photography is an art in itself that can generate extra income and introduce you to new clients. These sessions have become a popular and lucrative trend in the photography world and for good reason! Offering clients a quick and cost-effective way to capture memories while providing photographers with an opportunity to boost their income and expand their client base is a win-win, all the way around.
But, running successful mini-sessions means you need to put in some careful planning and execution. I’m a huge fan of offering mini-sessions a couple of times per year, and have been able to generate several thousand dollars of income with these quick mini-session days. So today, I want to delve into the five essential steps that photographers should take to ensure their mini sessions are a hit.
Step #1: Define your mini-session photography purpose.
Before opening up your calendar for mini-sessions, it’s crucial to define your purpose and select a theme that resonates with your target audience. Are you celebrating a holiday, offering family portraits, or showcasing a special season? Your “theme” will determine the overall aesthetic, setting, and time of year you use for your sessions. Clear themes make marketing easier and attract clients who are excited about the concept. I love to offer fall mini sessions so families can get their holiday photos done with the beautiful background of fall leaves.
Step #2: Plan, organize & get set up for success.
Planning is the cornerstone of successful mini sessions, especially when just getting started with offering them. Start by selecting a photo-friendly location that aligns with your chosen theme. Make sure it provides a variety of backdrops (not just a forest or a field or a beach – you want somewhere diverse!) and lighting options. Create a detailed schedule to accommodate multiple sessions in a day without compromising quality. Lastly, be sure you have all necessary equipment and backup gear in case of technical issues. Side note: It also helps to have a seamless booking and communication process to keep clients informed and engaged. There are tons of apps and programs that can keep your scheduling and communication on one place, like Acuity Scheduling, Bookedin, Calendly, and even Dubsado.
Step #3: Determine a timeline that makes sense for you.
Mini sessions, by nature, are brief (hence the name!), and typically last around 15 to 30 minutes per client. It’s important to manage time effectively to capture quality shots within the allocated window. You also want to clearly communicate the timeline to clients during booking and make sure to adhere to it. Let them know it’s important to be on time, and you might want to build in a buffer zone of 5-15 minutes between clients for hiccups or breaks. A well-organized schedule will prevent delays, reduce stress, and create a positive experience for both you and your clients.
Step #4: Give your clients the best experience possible.
A positive client experience should be your utmost priority when running mini-sessions. These sessions are quick, which might leave clients feeling frazzled or stressed. It’s up to you to create a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere by building rapport with clients and putting them at ease. Provide casual, fun guidance on poses and expressions to ensure authentic and emotional photographs. Make the sessions interactive, especially if children are involved, by using prompts, games, or play. Finally, go into the day relaxed and confident – your energy dictates the energy of the sessions!
Step #5: Deliver the goods efficiently.
The post-processing phase is where your creative vision truly comes to life. You want to have an efficient workflow for editing and delivering images. Keep a consistent editing style that complements the theme of the mini-sessions and remains true to your photographic style. And make sure to deliver the final images in a timely manner to maintain the excitement and trust of your clients.
